Painted reconstruction of a late Miocene sea, with dolphins, sharks, a turtle, billfish and a dense shoal of lanternfish

A reconstruction of the Caribbean sea in Panama in the late Miocene, built from fossils uncovered in the Chagres Formation. Lanternfish in their millions are planktivorous and support a food chain above them including dolphins, sharks and billfishes. By comparing these reconstructions with modern-day conditions, we show how the collapse of high ocean production has transformed the Caribbean over the last few million years.
